Baselworld 2019 - TUDOR Black Bay Bronze
TUDOR are a brand that have been taking the watch industry by force in the past few years, releasing spectacular watches year after year. We’ve seen the astounding Black Bay Chrono, the remarkable Black Bay GMT and this year TUDOR have brought us six new amazing watches in multiple variations.
One model that is well worth a closer look at is the new Black Bay Bronze, following the introduction of the first bronze model, a Black Bay with a chocolate brown dial, TUDOR have continued to explore this rare bronze material with its characteristic patina. A new colour scheme based on slate grey now embellishes the dial and bezel of this imposing divers’ watch, whose aesthetics change over time and whose naval inspiration can be found in every detail. The impressive Black Bay Bronze also offers high technical performance thanks to its Manufacture Calibre MT5601.
This unique timepiece features a case that “changes”, its 43 millimetre bronze case, an aesthetic which makes reference to the brass used in old ships and other diving. This “living” metal, a high-performance aluminium-copper alloy used particularly in naval engineering for submerged parts that need to be highly resistant to corrosion, will produce a subtle, unique patina on each and every watch case based on the wearers habits. The Black Bay Bronze also presents entirely satin-brushed finishes that guarantee homogeneous development of the patina.
The sensational combination of a slate grey dial, shaded from the exterior to the centre, and a bezel coupled with gold accents found on the hands and hour markers, completes the models aesthetics. The overall visual is that of a rich, patented object that might have sailed the globe on its wearer’s wrist for years at a time, looking like it was made for the wearer and their lifestyle.
The new TUDOR Black Bay Bronze features the Manufacture Calibre MT5601, a calibre that has been designed to ensure robustness, longevity and reliability. This calibre measures 33.8 millimetres, the widest diameter of all TUDOR’s calibres. Another tribute to the naval heritage is the strap with which fronts a historic aesthetic. It was the French Navy which had TUDOR watches delivered without bracelets and then fitted them with their own straps, one of which was recovered from a period diver and then kept in the brands archives giving them inspiration for the straps used on the Black Bay Bronze.
Like the other models in the Black Bay line, the Black Bay Bronze model features a dial inspired by the TUDOR divers’ watches produced in the 1950’s. It also adopts the characteristic angular hands known to collectors as the “snowflake” hands which also appeared in the brands 1969 catalogue.
TUDOR have set the standard high with yet another superb timepiece which is a true example of modern day watch-making technology combined with heritage and aesthetics of historic watches.
